What Causes Swelling In The Ankles After Gastrectomy?

I RECENTLY had a total gastrectomy and am experiencing swelling in my ankles and feet sometimes both sometimes only one the swelling at times has even risen up into the calfs. I looked online and found out that that was one of the after effects I should mention to my dr if I experienced post surgical. When I did he acted like he was unaware of this potential side effect and could not tel me why the major cancer hospitals website would have indicated it was a problem. I have researched the symptom with respect to a total gastrectomy trying to find out what this symptom meant with relationship to my surgery but cant find out

Hello Dear. Leg swelling can be due to many causes. After any surgical procedure (not just gastrectomy) there can be leg swelling due to the simple fact that there is total physical inactivity. Other causes may be some drugs especially anti hypertensive drugs like Calcium channel blockers (Amlodipine, Nifidipine)
Other serious causes of Leg swelling are- Heart failure, Kidney failure which is unlikely in you. Do not worry. Once you become ambulatory the leg swelling will come down. If it is worsening kindly consult your doctor to rule out serious causes of leg swelling.
