What Causes Swelling In The Ankles And Legs Along With Dizziness?

Hello I returned from a vacation cruise yesterday and still experiencing swollen feet and legs. Also, not sure if I have jet lag as having symptoms of dizziness, I just turned 68 on Sept 11th, and take medication for high blood pressure with water pill combination (Lisinopril-hctz 20/12.5mg) Also taking anti-anxiety meds and Xanax for sleeping.....Just now getting back to my normal eating habits with yogurt, fruits, nuts, and mostly no meat diet....my weight before cruise was 146 and now 153 and I am 5 2 Do I need to be concerned about swollen ankles, feet, and legs, and will dizziness subside after swelling goes away?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

This is probably a consequence of venous insufficiency. It means that your veins are dilated and there is blood stasis after long sitting or standing. This is not a serious issue and to confirm my diagnosis you need to do an ultrasound.

In mild cases it can be treated with elastic stockings, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, weight regulation and detralex ointment. In severe cases, surgery may be required as a permanent solution.

It is also advisable to reduce salt in your diet, keep legs elevated while sleeping and regulate blood pressure. Other causes such as kidneys and heart disorders are less common and should be considered only if venous insufficiency is ruled out by Doppler ultrasound or venography.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
