What Causes Swelling In The Ankles And Shortness Of Breath?

I am 73 years old with COPD and asthma Of late I have noticed swelling of both my ankles and shortness o breath climbing stairs. I do not have high blood pressure, most recent Dr visit was 116/76. My mother and father both had heart ailments, mother conjunctive heart disease. I weigh 125 pounds and am 5 foot 3. I have never had a stress test and all of my EKGs were normal. Should I see a cardiologist or my family physician for diagonosis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history given you seem to be suffering from congestive heart failure (right-sided heart failure) secondary to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

I advise you to consult a cardiologist for further evaluation by means of chest x-ray, ECG and echocardiography followed by appropriate treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
