Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling In The Ankles And Tight Sensation In The Calves?
Is there a connection between tightness in calf muscles and swelling of the ankle and foot? My husband began with a cramp in his calf and after a day of this his foot and ankle began to swell. The doctor has ruled out blood clot. Any suggestions as to what would cause this and how to solve it?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Since a hematoma has been ruled out, the tightness of the calf area and ankles would be due to edema caused by the muscle injury. Your husband has to rest the leg and foot and keep it elevated as much as is possible to reduce the swelling and tightness. It usually takes 2 weeks or more for muscle injury to heal and the person to start normal activities.
Thank You!
