What Causes Swelling In The Hips?

My mom has a swollen area that is hard on the side of her left hip area. Had a CT and X-ray done. Doesn t hurt her. They said its fluid. Said it wasn t third spacing. Any idea what it is called? The Dr said something that started with the letter ( a ). I was putting ice on it but he said because it s hard, put heat on it. She is bed ridden and has a PT come out 2x wk. She s 86 years of age. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the health problems your 86 year old mother is going through.

The hard swollen area on the side of her left hip that was diagnosed as fluid could be arthritis bursa inflammation (bursitis).

However, I need to have a look at her ct-scan and X-ray reports for final diagnosis.

Follow her doctor's advice.
Consult with her orthopedic specialist about best PT exercise she should be done to avoid further trauma.

Wish fast recovery.
