What Causes Swelling In The Knee Joints While On Vitamin B-12 Supplement?
Hello: For the last 6 weeks I have been taking 1000 mcg of vitamin B-12 and 2000 IU Vitamin D3. Not per my Dr s instructions. Have noticed significant knee swelling and joint pain. Have experienced knee joint pain for many years but recently has been more painful. Could these over the counter extra meds be a contributory factor? I am a healthy, slender, athletic, woman who has no other issues. Thank you
Hello, Thanks for the query. Daily requirement of vitamin D is about 400 units. Exposure to early morning sunlight will help in getting the much needed vitamin. If over all dietary intake is poor, plus there is no exposure to sunlight (no outdoor activity or exercise), then one may develop the deficiency. In such a case higher doses are recommended. If you have got a blood level of both B12 and Vit D3 estimated and found the deficiency then current dose that you are taking may be needed. Otherwise it is not required and can lead to excess and symptoms of toxicity. This can lead to muscle pain and joint pains. My advise is please get a blood vit D3 and B12 estimation done and then if there is deficiency, then only take additional supplements. Vit D3 is a fat soluble vitamin and gets stored in good quantity in the tissues. So excess is not good. Thanks.
