What Causes Swelling In The Knees After A Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

I had a total knee replacement the end of January. I tend to swell after surgery and take some time to heal. I had my right knee done in June of 2016.. I fell a couple of weeks ago getting into the shower. My right foot slid right out from under me causing me to hit my head but the left leg hit hard and the inner side of my calf slammed down and it hurt. My head had a bump never lost consciousness and my right knee minimal pain. The left calf however bruised bit more internal, and so painful still two weeks after. Doctor can t see me until early June. Physical Therapy can feel the effected area and is warm to the touch. What would be your recommendation? Jane from MA

Hi,

The pain that you are feeling is related to tissue damage from the falling that you had.You might have injured an internal structure of the knee (meniscus, ligaments), or a neuromuscular injury.
This might continue for some other days or weeks, this depends on the type of the damage it has.

To improve pain and injury i suggest you to:
-Take anti-inflammatory drug Naproxen once daily,or Ibuprofen twice daily for some weeks, also Acetominofen+Codeine for some days.
-Apply cold packs locally
-Try to rest to protect the injured area
-You can wrap the injured area with an elastic bandage

If pain doesn't improve the next weeks or gets worse even taking the treatment, I suggest you to consult a doctor, to exclude any fracture or other damage of the knee that require surgical treatment.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
