What Causes Swelling In The Knuckle After An Injury?

I punched a light post 3 weeks ago and I thought it was broken. Went to the doctor and they said it was fine. It s still swollen at the middle knuckle. My only concern now is the possibility of a pinched nerve or nerve damage in general. How would I know?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
A nerve damage can result in-
-Tingling and numbness around the area
-Pain
Also it is highly unlikely that you damaged a nerve as there is no major nerve passing over or around the knuckle.
The swelling might be due to inflammation post the blunt trauma and joint injury.
I would recommend cold compresses, over the counter pain killer like Tylenol and crepe bandage to reduce movement at the knuckle joint which will help in faster healing.
Hope this helps, thank you.
