Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My left ankle and foot are very swollen and now there is a painless red rash encircling the entire ankle above the ankle bone. My left knee has been hurting for several weeks and saw my Dr last week. Possible torn meniscus from old injury. Hard to walk. Starting PT next week but am concerned about the appearance of the rash.
Hi, thanks for your question. I have read it and understand your concern. It would be helpful if you gave a bit more details about your ankle and foot e.g. how did it start, is it warm, how the rash looks, any puncture at the swollen site, any fever?? etc,
There could be a number of explanations.
It could be an infection of the skin and/or underlying structures causing the swelling and the rash. Sometimes a bug enters through a punctured wound.
Another possibility could be the immobility of the left leg which can lead to swollen left foot and ankle. Trauma can also cause swelling but this would not be the case here as you have not mentioned any history of that.
Any blockage in the vessels (veins) of the left leg can also cause swelling but mostly it would be without a rash.
Recommendation: Please get your foot and ankle examined by your doctor who will then advise on further management as per the clinical findings.
Hope this helps.
