What Causes Swelling In The Legs After A Knee Replacement Surgery?
Yes please I had a total knee replacement surgery on Jan. 22 This past week I have noticed areas on my leg feeling numb. Around my outer ankle is swollen and numb and painful to touch and ice cold From my knee down is ice cold, been wearing TED stockings as ordered and took aspirin as ordered What’s wrong?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is one of the most common complications of total knee replacement.
DVT develops when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs causing leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with no symptoms.
It can develop if you have certain medical conditions that affect how your blood clots. It can also happen if you do not move for a long time, such as after surgery or an accident, or when you're confined to bed.
It can be very serious because blood clots in your veins can break loose, travel through your bloodstream and lodge in your lungs, blocking blood flow (pulmonary embolism).
So, you are advised to visit the hospital immediately for further evaluation and certain lab tests such as an ultrasound and blood test for the confirmation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
