What Causes Swelling In The Legs, Ankles And Feet While On Hydrochlorothiazide?

Yes, I am currently taking hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg. My legs, ankles, and feet keep swelling to point that it feels like I am going to burst out of my shoes. I am also extremely tired all the time even though I get 8-9 hours a sleep each night. My hair is also falling out. What could be causing these issues?

Hi,

The most common causes of fluid retention and leg swelling are heart or kidney issues. They would also explain the tiredness you mention as fatigue is a common symptom in heart and kidney conditions.

Hydrochlorothiazide shouldn't be a cause. So I suggest you contact your doctor to have some blood tests for kidney function, liver function, electrolyte levels and if no abnormalities are found a heart evaluation by ultrasound may be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
