Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling In The Legs When Suffering From Diabetes?
My mom went inthrough the hospital for water retention on Jan 24. She is 88. Diabetic. She s now in rehab for about 4 weeks. Two weeks ago, her legs were swelling. Now her lower leg/ calves are rock hard. She is on limited fluids as they want to be sure her kidneys keep functioning. She was doung dialysis 3 times a week but stopoed about 4-5 weeks ago.
As a urologist, I can understand your anxiety. Your mother has diabetic CKD (chronic kidney disease). The reason for her leg and calf swelling is due to the kidney failure. After the dialysis, it will reduce a bit but gradually it will increase till the next one. She should not take more fluids than her urine output (400 mL).
No fresh fruits, coconut water and salt restricted diet. Follow doctor's advice. A Doppler ultrasound of the legs would be done and treatment can be planned.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Matthew J. Mangat
