What Causes Swelling In The Legs While On Gabapentin?

I have been taking gabapentin for over a year. Recently I am experieing swelling in my legs, ankles, & feet. Tried resting, ice, elevation.,nothing worked. Also, feeling electrical impulses. Have trouble sleeping . Have also had weight gain & breasts swelling. Do you think all these symptoms could be from gabapentin? I started taking after back surgery. Thank you for your consideration to this matter. ..

Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms you are experiencing of swelling of the legs and feet, electric like impulses, tiredness are features of Neuropathy of the lower limb, possibly due to the lower back problem you are having which could cause nerve compression. Gabapentin is a medication for relief of nuropathy. This should not cause swelling of the legs. If you are still having the symptoms, in spite of taking the medication for over one year, you can consider changing over to later generation medication like Cap Lyrica. Please do consult your Neurologist for examination, investigation and advise on treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
