What Causes Swelling In The Legs While Suffering From Vascular Disease?
My brother may have vascular disease. His doctor has suggested he see a vascular surgeon and a heart doctor. His legs are swollen and he s supposed to keep them elevated, he didn t do very well on that. He is being prescribed antibiotics. He is overweight--obese--and does not eat or exercise well. He works for Toys R Us but has been off work for two weeks per doctor s note. We are selling California house and he will move to Scottsdale AZ with me in mid October. I m concerned he will need surgery ... but the house will be sold shortly. He is also on Medi Cal and I will have to cancel that and get insurance here. What to do? A lot of questions...
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves. If this is not your case then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form. You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures. Also, you should have Aspirine and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks. In most cases it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
