What Causes Swelling In The Lips?

My boyfriend had a nasty fall on a bike earlier today. It left him with a fat lip and a bloody nose along with other scrapes. 6 hours later, the lip has maintained the swelling, there is major bruising underneath, and the bloody nose has subsided. I was curious if there is something more to be concerned about other than the swollen lip.

Hi.
Thanks for the query..

It looks like bruising and hematoma formation of the lip due to trauma to the lip..
Swollen or fat lip is due to inflammatory process post trauma to the soft tissues.

Swelling can take some time to subside and you should not worry about it..

As of now you should do alternate warm and cool compresses over the lips..

You can take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen for pain relief..

If there is any scratches apply antiseptic ointment over it..

If the symptoms worsen consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
