What Causes Swelling In The Lower Leg?

I had an I and D of a boil on the right groin. I had a drain inserted to drain and the drain has now been remove. the area where the I/D was done is hard and still draining a moderate amount. However, now my right leg below the knee is swollen with 2 plus edema? What is going on?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As there is a history of surgical procedure done thus it is possibly a Seroma [collection of serum under the surface of your skin] and swelling is the clinical feature of inflammation

2. If along with swelling you notice symptoms like: bloody drainage, high fever,increasing pain with increase in size of swelling seek immediate medical attention.

3. If for some reasons the person sits for extended periods of time without elevating the leg this may result in edema and could indicate some complication arising from swelling itself [like DVT] so if you notice substantial increase in your swelling you should contact your physician immediately, till then:

- leg elevation [ by placing pillow under calf/ankle] and avoid standing for long periods
- avoid salt rich diet [which causes retention of water]
