What Causes Swelling In The Lower Leg?

I injured my lower leg on a metal pole. That part is swollen and a little bruised and the skin below above the ankle is clear, but the lower inside part of my FOOT is now is DARKLY BRUISED. I am an 81-year-old female. My orthopedist, 5 days ago, took x-rays and the bones are fine. It is not broken but should I be concerned?
