What Causes Swelling In The Lower Legs Post A Corrective Surgery?

My friend (female, age 62, Hx of osteoporosis) broke the upper part of her femur. Corrective surgery was delayed for approximately 36 hours. She is approximately 3 wks. post op. Recovery was going well until 3 days ago, when both legs began to swell. Now both lower legs are not only swollen, but very red, also. Doctor says he has no idea what s wrong. US results were negative for blood clot. Patient can no longer do PT, since the legs have become quite weak. Any ideas are most welcome! Thank you!

Take care
