What Causes Swelling In The Lower Lip?

I thought I had a cold sore developing but it just kept growing till my whole bottom lip is swollen and covered in crusty sores. My top lip now is also swollen but no sores. My chin and inside my mouth get itchy. The whole thing tends to sting and then get itchy as well. The usual cold sore treatments haven't done a thing. My bottom lip looks like it could burst. There are almost no crusty bits off my lips, just a threatening spreading under the bottom one but nothing yet. It has been 6 days at this stage. After 2 doctors visits today one said cold sores the other took a swab, gave me antibiotics and said maybe Impetigo. Apparently there are a few cases of impetigo at the school where I work. Strangely I can't find any pictures of impetigo which are completely confined to enormously swollen lips. What do you think?

Welcome to HCM..

As per your complain it seems that the symptoms of swelling of lips even without blisters or sores can be due to Allergic reaction causing Allergic Angioedema of lips....
It can be due to any food or medication while other causes can be allergic reaction to any skin cosmetic,
soap, lip balm etc..
I would suggest you to consult a Physician and get evaluated and a clinical evaluation and investigations
like blood tests for allergies like RAST TEST, Patch test, Food Challenge test can help in ruling out the
exact cause of the symptoms and treat accordingly.
As of now take anti allergics like Levocetrizine..
Do cool compresses over the lips .
You can be advised injectable steroids and antihistamines to reduce swelling.
