What Causes Swelling In The Neck?

I was eating an apple last night and instantly the left side of my neck swelled up. It looked and felt like a hot dog was under the skin from near my neck to under my ear. The area is a little sore today but the swelling is gone. Is this something other than a strained muscle?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your question.

It can very well be a pulled muscle which was painful during that time.
Usually swelling in the neck can have multiple causes ranging from an infection of the hair follicle which goes under the skin, it can also be lymph node which has swollen due to an infection or as you said a pulled muscle.
If it has resolved then it is not to worry about.
Just keep observing, if it happens again I would advise you to take over the counter pain killer and see your physician.

Wishing you good health.
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me.
Best regards.
I find this answer helpful
