Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling In The Right Ankle After A Hysterectomy?
yes, I had a hysterectomy on July 31 and they removed lymph nodes from my pelvic area. I had three high res radiation treatments that were finished Sept 18. I went on a business trip this week and flew a long 4 hour flight home. My right ankle/foot swelled. Kept it elevated overnight and it went down, but came to the office today and with sitting still most of the day it is swelled again. I called my doctor, who is supposed to call me back but was wondering what I should do in case they do not get back to me today.
Lymph nodes (along with your lower extremity veins) aid in fluid return from you legs to your heart. If the lymph nodes and vessel were compromised and/or removed due to you surgical procedure - it is normal to experience increased edema and fluid retention in that extremity.
Athletic compression stockings and specific exercises to increase venous return. can be extremely helpful in preventing the lower extremity edema. Elevating the extremity while seated can also help. I would seek a Physical therapist to aid in the exercise modalities to increase venous flow. Additionally; you may want to discuss certain medications with you PCP for edema control.
