What Causes Swelling In The Thigh After Getting Vaccinated For Meningitis?

Hello Doctor, My child - 4 years got vaccinated for Menigitis day before yesterday. Menectra vaccine was given to him by my Ped. He was normal the next day till evening. Evening he had developed swelling in the left thigh where the vaccine was adminstered and had difficulty in walking. I took him to the ped again, who advised to apply ice pack and administer 10 ML of Ibugesic+ once in six hours till I go for a review again today. After some time he called up and advised me to give Chymarol Forte 1 tab ( thrice a day) crushed and mixed with honey. I gave him both Ibugesic and Chymoraol ( 2 doses over). He is able to walk properly now. However there is a very minimal reduction in the swelling He does not allow me to touch the area. Is chymoaral safe on 4 year old. Does this have something to do with the adverse effects of Menectra. Please help me.I am worried

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Sorry that your little one is going through this.
Some children respond more than others to vaccines. It is not uncommon to see a swelling around the injection site.
However it should reduce in two days and fully resolve in a week.
It is not normal, however, for there to be a bruise or worsening of the swelling.

Please continue to apply ice pack every hour for 10 minutes. Chymoral is safe and helps to relieve swelling.
Gentle massage with oil during a bath (if you can convince him to) will help. Make sure he stays well hydrated though.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Wish you both good health
