What Causes Swelling In The Throat While On Prilosec For Gastroparesis?

Hi, I am about to begin taking Prilosec once again. I have Gastroparisis and I was taken off the drug about 4 years ago due to side effects and the fact I was on too high a dose. I had been on meds such as that for 20 years. Now I can no longer just use Mylanta and or tums. My throat is badly swollen and my esophagus is eroding. I am wondering if I start Prilosec again can I still use back up Mylanta? What should I look for in adverse signs?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Swelling in the throat is commonly due to Pharyngitis, Tonsillitis, Swollen lymph nodes, lymphoma, etc. Get physically examined, get treated at the earliest. Swelling in the throat is not related to Prilosec or Mylanta. However, if you think that Prilosec had been causing you side effects resulting in throat swelling, inform it to your treating doctor.

Prilosec is Omeprazole, you can be given some other medication that suits you better like PPI's, Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole, etc. You can take antacids, if it suits you better.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
