What Causes Swelling In The Tongue After Tooth Extraction?

I had a wisdom tooth extraction about 5 weeks ago, approximately 2 weeks after the extraction the soft tissue under the tongue started to swell. Not the tissue connected to the tongue however underneath the tongue area. I did go back to my dentist and he states he feels this has nothing to do with the tooth extraction. The area under my tongue is still terribly swelled.

If the extraction site is healed completely and there is no pain in the extraction site then yes, it is true that the swelling under the tongue is not due to the extraction..

Swelling under the tongue can be due to swelling of the submandibular salivary gland.

It can be either due to infection in the gland or obstruction in the duct of the gland due to stone formation..

So it is advisable to consult an Oral Surgeon or an Oral Physician and get evaluated and an x ray of the area can be done to rule out the exact cause of the swelling..

In case if it is due to infection then antibiotics will be advised so that the infection heals..

If it is due to obstruction in the duct of the gland then removal of obstruction manually if it is superficial or surgically if it is deep has to be done..
