What Causes Swelling In Tonsils And How To Treat It?

My son who is five and my other son who is 21 months old have been suffering from extremely large tonsils. I have visited the doctor twice and both times have been told it s just a virus. It has been over a month now and the swelling isn t getting any better. Actually my 21 month old is getting worse, you can not even see his vulva now.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your both sons having enlarged tonsils, one of them is 5 year old and the younger is 21 months old that is nearing 2 years, consulted the Doctor who said this is due to viral infection and the 21 months old baby's tonsils are so large that uvula can not be seen.
I can understand the concerns.
Since you have not mentioned about any treatment history or investigations I will advise you the following:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation and investigations.
This will will to see whether there is infection with viral or bacterial cause.
IF this is due to bacterial cause then an additional course of an antibiotic can help.
Other wise a properly weight calculated doses of anti-inflammatory should help both of them to have reduction in size of tonsils.
Also give proper doses of multivitamins and mineral.
Warm saline gargles alternate with liquid povidone iodine gargles may help but see if such small patients can do these or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
