Hi,
There are several possible causes of swelling in the calves, ankles, and feet. One of the most common causes is water retention, which can be caused by a variety of factors such as heart,
liver or
kidney disease, certain medications, or prolonged sitting or standing.
Given your recent history of donating plasma, it is possible that the swelling is related to this activity. The
anticoagulant used during the donation process can sometimes cause swelling or inflammation, particularly if it is not being metabolized efficiently by your body. This could be why you are experiencing swelling more intensely after donation.
It is also possible that there may be other underlying medical conditions that are contributing to the swelling. For example,
high blood pressure,
diabetes, or
venous insufficiency can all cause swelling in the legs and feet.
I would recommend that you consult with a healthcare professional to determine the cause of your swelling. They may recommend some tests or diagnostic imaging to help pinpoint the underlying cause. In the meantime, it may be helpful to elevate your legs when possible, avoid standing or sitting for
prolonged periods, and stay hydrated.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
