Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A friends daughter has slight swelling to one side of her lip and no other symptoms after taking penicillin twice today. She is no longer taking the penicillin and has taken Benadryl. There has been no other swelling for the last hour. Should she still seek care in the ER? Or can the mother just monitor.
As per your query your friend's daughter had swelling in lips and she took antibiotic penicillin .Well the symptom you describe is clearly indication of drug reaction.Penicillin is most common cause of drug allergy.
In mild allergy the symptoms can be relived by taking over the counter antihistamine drug as you are already taking benadryl .If symptoms stat going away after taking anti histamine drug or do not get worse then there is no need for medical help .But if the condition is getting worse immediately seek medical help.
Ask your doctor to prescribe substitute to penicillin or perform desensitization therapy,in which dose is increased gradually so that the immune system of body will adaped.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
