What Causes Swelling On The Base Of The Brain?

My father-in-law was rushed to the hospital with dizziness. Xrays showed swelling of the base of the brain. They transported him to a level 1 facility. They are saying a stroke. Does that make sense? They are performing an MRI right now. What should we expect next?
