Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
HI, I have a swollen elbow with what seems to have started as a pimple. Went to the dr. yesterday and was given antibiotics (duracef). The pain is only there when i touch something with my elbow, but the swelling is there. How long should I wait to go to the hospital, now that I started antibiotics yesterday?
Elbow swelling can be cause from trauma, prolonged pressure, infection, medical conditions (rheumatoid arthritis and gout). Your doctor treat you with antibiotic so its mean that he treat you the infection.
The infected bursa in your join produce fluid, redness, swelling and pain also we need to differentiate with cellulitis. Do you have any all those symptom above? Any fever?
Normally if you have joint infection you may need joint drainage and send for culture to find out what is real pathogen of infection to treat the right antibiotic and more effective.
Normally antibiotic effect 24 to 48 hours. If not you should go to see your doctor back.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General & Family Physician
