What Causes Swelling On The Face After Taking Flagyl?
I began taking metronidazole 250 mg. and ciprofloxacin HLC 500 mg on Thursday for treatment of diverticulitis. I took my 4 am dose of Flagyl (metronidazole) and at 5am noticed swelling on the right side of my face, which seems to be continuing to spread. No tingling, visual disturbances or anything else associated. I am applying ice. Should I take diphenhydramine ?
You appear to have a delayed Allergic reaction to either of the antibiotics.. Flagyl that contains active ingredient Metronidazole or Ciprofloxacin.. As the swelling is spreading, you should consult an Emergency room and get evaluated.. Do not take the antibiotics anymore until you get tested for which antibiotics is causing allergy.. Yes, you can take Diphenhydramine ( benadryl) for reducing the swelling but if the symptoms are severe you should get a steroid shot so that it will suppress the reaction and reduce swelling.. Also get a blood test done to check for compatible antibiotics so that you can take safely..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
