What Causes Swelling On The Right Foot?

My brother s rt foot was swollen and he went to VA doctor and doctor said he may have syphillis and took a test. I check on my brother every 6 wks because he does not like to be bothered-has mental issues, is 66 and never married. If he has this, what stage is he in and can I catch it from eating food he cooked or a kiss on my cheek when I leave-I never noticed any sores on his mouth but a few months ago he thought he had ringworm on his scalp.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Syphilis is transmitted from person to person by direct contact with a sore. If he does not have any sores or there was no direct contact with any that are present then transmission is not likely.

There are 4 stages of syphilis but staging is dependent on the signs and symptoms are seen on physical examination.

If there are no signs or symptoms, then a person is said to have latent syphilis.
Stage 1, involves the presence of sores
Stage 2, there may be multiple symptoms in different organ systems
Stage 3, actually appears 10 to 30 years after initial infection

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
