Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling On The Tongue After Taking Oxybutynin?
My husband started taking oxybutynin & 2 weeks later he got thrush like symptoms. His tongue swelled, the top of his mouth felt super smooth, the sides of his mouth felt coarse, & his lips swelled & were red & chapped. He said everything he tried to eat tasted & felt like wet sand. Because of this, he stopped eating everything but chicken broth for several days. It is the fifth day of all of this & he says it still has not gotten any better & still cannot eat. I went with him to the doctor & she thought he might have thrush. Do you have any thoughts on this, even though I know it is difficult because you cannot see him?
Well the symptoms are looking more like severe inflammation in mouth that can be secondary to side effects of medication and in case if there is white coating on tongue also present then it can be due to yeast Infection or oral thrush. So my suggestion is to consult your physician and get evaluated. He can either change the drug or reduce the dose of the medication for relief. For now to reduce pain and discomfort he can gargle with numbing mouth wash containing Lignocaine.
He can suck ice pops and do cool water rinses. He can also gargle with specialized mouthwash like Magic mouthwash as it contains a number of ingredients like antifungal, numbing, antiseptic, etc. Avoid spicy and irritant foods. Do cool compresses over the lips and at the corners.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
