What Causes Swelling, Pain And While Spots On The Right Tonsils?

I have swelling and white spots on my right tonsil and it is painful to swollow to the point that i almost would rather drool. yesterday I had a rapid strep done and it came back negative. my body is aching and I am unusually tired. I think I may have a fever but dont have ready access to a thermometer. I ahve been getting increasingly tired earlier each day for a week.

Hi,

As per your complain white pustules over the tonsil along with pain on swallowing and fever seems to be probably due to a severe case of viral throat infection. White spots indicates that there can be secondary bacterial infection along with viral. For confirmation consult an otolaryngologist or an ENT expert and get evaluated.

He can do investigations like Throat swab culture and blood test can help in diagnosis. You can be advised:

- Antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection.

- Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain.

- Doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.

- You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat.

- Gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine.

- Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water.

- Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity.

- Avoid spicy and chilled foods.
