I have had a swelling on the top of the phalanges on my fourth toe on the left foot. The pain is not in the joint but above the phalanges is a swelling that is sometimes red and hot to the touch. It is very painful to wear closed shoes. I have had X-rays of the foot and there is no problem with the bone structure or flow to the foot. The orthopedic surgeon does not know what it is and wishes to send me to a rheumatologist. What could it be
