What Causes Swelling Underneath Tongue And Tenderness In Neck?

I was diagnosed with pharyingitis and tonsillitis 3 weeks ago. I was given antibiotics which helped the pharyngitis but not the tonsillitis. I ve been having problems with my tonsils for the past 2 years. Now they are more swollen then when I got the antibiotics and my ears hurt and itch far inside. It is also painful to stick out my tongue or move it a certain way. I have pain in my jaw and neck as well. It hurts to do mostly anything that has to do with my mouth/jaw. I wake up sometimes to the inside of my mouth swollen underneath my tongue. What should I do? Should I get my tonsils removed? Why is underneath my tongue swollen? Why is my neck so tender?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern.

Jaw pain, neck pain and swelling underneath your tongue as per your query could be because of tonsilitis along with pharyngitis. Tonsils get swallowed and whenever you get up in the morning your nose must gets obstructed and all secretions accumulate in thorax and give you lump type feel undeeneath tongue. Due to continous pressure it causes jaw pain and neck pain.

I would suggest you to massage your neck area and area under chin with desi ghee , almond oil so that dryness and swelling get subsided. Gargle atleast 3 times a day with betadine. Antibiotics such as azithromycin, multivitamin tablet and if you have fever take paracetamol combination for this. Avoid eating oily , spicy food and cold drinks as that will exagerrate your symptoms. Gargles with saline water gives you relief.

You can go for tonsilectomy if your symptoms really trobilng you and not subsiding after proper course of medication. I would suggest you to visit ENT surgeon nearby you and get it diagnosed properly. Take prescribed antibiotic course as per your symptoms for 3-5 days. If your symptoms still persist then you can go for tonsilectomy after consultation with ENT speacialist.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
