What Causes Swollen And Bruised Foot After An Injury?

I injured my ankle/foot running 4 weeks ago, had it x-rayed a week later and told no fracture. The swelling and pain has been continuous no significant improvement, still walking with limp. Today a bruise has started to appear where the pain is strongest. Should I worry? What is your advice?
