What Causes Swollen And Painful Lumps Under The Armpit?

For the past 2 years I ve been getting different lumps under my right armpit, occasionally under my left also. They swell up and I have agonizing pain to where I can t even move my arm the way I d like. They become raw after a while and sometimes even form a hole in which I haven t a clue as to what is inside of them so I don t bother finding out from fear that I might make it worse. They scar very bad and the shortly after they scar and go away more lumps appear sometimes even in the same place as the previous ones where. I ve asked my local doctor and my answer was hot compression which is not working well. What can I do?

Hi,

There can be various reasons for swelling in the axilla / armpit. We need to have a detailed history and physical examination for this.It can be due to infections (bacterial or viral) of surrounding tissues, lipoma (collection of fatty tissue), or sometimes blood related disorders (leukemia or lymphoma).

I feel that you should get some investigations done like complete blood count, ESR,sugar levels and ultrasound of the area. Maybe, tissue diagnosis is also needed where a part of swelling or whole of it is taken and tested (FNAC or biopsy).

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
