What Causes Swollen And Tender Cyst On The Pubic Area?

I think I have a cyst in my pubic area. I started off thinking it was an ingrown hair so I picked at it an opened the wound. I piece of hair did come out, but now the area is swollen and tender to the touch. Could it be infected? What are the chances of getting a staph infection? I read a brief article on the internet out of Cosmopolitan magazine where the same thing happened to a lady and she ended up having a staph infection that landed her in the ER.

Hello,
Welcome to HCM,

The history and symptoms suggests me that it could be an ingown hair or any number of things. Don't be embarrassed to see your doctor.

As for the pain, try a hot compress such as a wash cloth soaked with hot water. This may help with the pain and also may encourage it to drain which will also help with the pain.

If it does drain, put an antibiotic cream like neosporin on the external surface of the lesion.
Thank you.
