What Causes Swollen Ankles Along With Mottled Legs And Arms?

I had spinal surgery revisit 2 days ago, 6 week post op of original spinal fusion. Now my legs and arms are mottled and my ankles are swollen. I have no history of edema And no major medical problems - take no routine meds. What is this a sign of and what should I look for?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

There can be various reasons for the swelling of ankles and mottled arms and legs like:
- Prolong bed rest related issues
- Platelet dysfunction
- Circulatory venous stasis
- Side effect of certain drugs as analgesic, antibiotics
- Previous disorder of cardiovascular system
- Chronic heavy smoking
- Others

A clinical work up with detailed systemic examination, including peripheral pulses, one may require certain lab tests with Doppler ultrasound of the upper and lower limbs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
