What Causes Swollen Ankles, Frequent Urination At Night, Lower Back Pain And Hematuria?

I am a 58 year old married female who is about 50 pounds overweight. We are raising 4 of our grandchildren ages 7, 6, 5, & 4. We own our own business so I spend a lot of time sitting at the computer. My feet & ankles have been extremely swollen, the left more so than the right. The swelling is reduced some by keeping my feet elevated or just staying in bed. I always get up in the middle of the night to urinate. I am always tired. Recently I have had bouts of sudden itching of my hands and even more in my feet. I have also noticed some lower back pains that come on more like sharp twinges and don t last very long. I have recently been to the doctor and had tests run. My sugar was elevated but my A1C was perfect and I am somewhat of a sugerholic. I also have blood in my urine but no sign of infection and no other abnormal test results. I am currently waiting to be contacted to schedule an appointment with radiology for a sonogram of my legs to check the veins for any abnormalities. I have also been referred to a urologist because of the blood in my urine. Is there any particular test I should ask to have run?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

There can be multiple various reasons for the swelling ankles and frequent urination at night as
- malfunction of kidney
- deep vein thrombosis
- dependent edema
- protein metabolism issues
- obesity-induced changes
- thyroid abnormalities
- the side effect of certain drugs
- others.

Specific attention to basic blood tests with creatinine level, ultrasound of the KUB, Doppler ultrasound to evaluate blood circulation of both lower limbs must be a priority of evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel,
General Surgeon
