What Causes Swollen Ankles While Suffering From COPD?

I have COPD and recently I have noticed my ankles swelling. I m left handed and it appears that my left ankle swells more than the right. Is it my diet, too much salt, sugar, etc.? or is it part of my COPD? I had lung cancer approximately 30 years ago and have been cancer free but I use oxygen regularly now. I exercise with bowling twice a week.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Swelling of the ankles may be due to : (1) venous disease- varicose veins can cause swelling, the swelling tends to be absent or minimal in the morning and increase as the day progresses

(2) heart disease- lung disease can sometimes be associated with heart disease so this should be ruled out by testing

eg echo

(3)liver or kidney disease can also cause swelling. This can be assessed by blood tests

(4)side effect of medication such as amlodipine , which is a blood pressure medication

I hope this helps
