What Causes Swollen Ankles With No Pain For A 70-year-old?

Hello, I am 70 yrs young and in good health. I have regular check ups with my physician ( 2x a year, one of them an extensive annual exam) and I have a cardiologist. I have hypertension and my BP is regulated with the following: 1 80mg Telmisarten in the AM, 1 Clonodine .5mg at Lunch, Amolodopine Besylate 7.5mg at Dinner, and 2 Clonodine .5mg plus an 80mg aspirin at bedtime. I took the amlodipine an hour ago and went outside for a walk. I looked down and noticed my left ankle had swollen...no symptom, no pain...just really swollen. I came back in and elevated my legs and it has decreased but still swollen. WEB MD has given me 23 possible issues...quite a bit to consider, right! I will see my doctor on Monday as I am a member of MD VIP....but would love a guess at this tonight... Thank you! David F

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

A long standing edema ankles with history of hypertension and intake of amlodipine for BP control, suggest possible side effect of fluid retention once the cardiac or pulmonary cause of ankle swelling is ruled out. Must discuss the same with your treating physician and get necessary changes done in your current drug basket. Meanwhile you can take salt restricted diet with leg elevation when resting for sometime.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
