What Causes Swollen Feet And Aching Calves While On Norethisterone?
I have just got back from a holiday in Spain where I have been taking norethisterone for approx 17 days, while on holiday I experienced feet swelling and aching calves but put that down to the heat, I stopped taking the tablets a couple of days ago and my period has started but I have some unexplained bruising on my inner thighs, is this a side effect from the tablets?
Long term intake of hormonal contraceptives can cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, breast tenderness and mood disturbances. Serious side effects such as swelling or pain in the legs, chest pain can occur in certain patients. You should stop the drug immediately and visit your doctor for further testing.
Any history of blood clots or stroke should be ruled out. Bruising can also occur due to any bleeding disorders which should also be ruled out. Doppler scan may be required to detect any vascular abnormality. Complete blood count especially platelet count, bleeding time, clotting time and Prothrombin time should be tested.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
