What Causes Swollen Feet And Ankles When On Medication For Alzheimer's?
Hi my dad has got swollen feet and ankles he's on medication and has alzhimers later stages at only 58 years we have seen that two of his toe nails have gone black one on each foot he spends a lot of time on his feet and will not sit down what can we do to help thank
The swollen feet and ankle is due to reduced circulation leading on to edema of the legs. Another possibility needs to be ruled out which includes cardiac failure especially in a patient with hypertension. If you have associated blackish discoloration, it could be progressing onto gangrene of the toes. Is there any associated diabetes and hypertension. Improving the circulation and putting the limb into elevated position (keep two pillows below the legs, while in sleeping supine position so that the legs are above the level of the heart). If it still persists anti diuretics are necessary. Being a patient of Late Alzheimer, I would ask you meet the concerned doctor in relation to gangrene as early as possible. If the swelling does not subside after elevation of limbs, for medication do visit your doctor.
Hope i have answered your query. Happy to help, if any further queries.
