General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Swollen feet and ankle are commonly caused by venous insufficiency, water retention, infection, DVT, heart, liver or kidney disease. Since you have swollen feet and ankle you are suggested to get it examined and treated before taking a flight as it is common for ankle and feet to swell in flights due to gravitational edema. Certain medications also cause swelling as side effects, be careful of what medicines you have been taking.

Cut on salt intake, Maintain healthy BMI. Keep your foot at rest. Avoid standing for a long time. Stay away from strenuous exercises. Soak your feet in cold water. Drink plenty of water. Wear support stockings. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected and symptoms, get clinically examined. Your treating doctor will do blood tests, Urinalysis, USG,CT, MRI and electrocardiogram, etc. Once the diagnosis is made treatment will be started.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
