Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I suddenly developed very swollen glands on the left side of my face. It s the one along the jaw, and the one under the ear along the neck near the jaw. When I eat, it fills painfully full, but I m not able to finish my meal because of the sudden nausea. Am using hot water bottle, drinking extra fluids, and messege to try and cause fuids to flow in those glands. But, what s causing this?
As per your complain the swelling of the glands during meals indicates that there is blockage in the ducts of the salivary glands.
There are major salivary glands present one in front of the ear known as PAROTID GLAND and the other just below the lower jaw and is known as SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND.
The blockage of the ducts of salivary glands which carry saliva from the gland to mouth occurs by formation of small stones known as SIALOLITHS by the minerals present in saliva leading to obstruction in the flow of saliva and during meals there is increase in the flow of saliva and when the path of flow is obstructed there is back flow of saliva to the glands leading to increase in size during food intake.
In your case as you find two glands swollen during meals it can be obstruction in ducts of both the parotid and submandibular salivary gland of the same side.
One thing should be noted that if both the glands are getting obstructed due to stones there may be increased viscosity of saliva due to some underlying disease.
I would suggest you to consult and oral pathologist and get evaluated for the exact cause of swelling and the doctor will do a clinical evaluation and required pathological investigations and treatment will be planned accordingly
Hope your query is solved..
Regards..
