What Causes Swollen Left Foot And Severe Back Pain While Treating Osteoarthritis?

My left foot is swollen - only the left - this started yesterday morning. Was much better this morning and is now swelling again. Also, had some pretty intense pain in my lower back radiating into my hip yesterday. That was also better this morning, but is now returning. This happened about a month ago, and then just went away. I have osteoarthritis and often have pain in various joints -- usually knees, ankles, hips -- so I dismiss most aches and pains to the arthritis. But this pain in association with the swollen foot seems different. Any ideas??

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well, as per the history the osteoarthritis is for long, the left lower back ache was 1 month ago and recurred but the swelling in left foot alone is for a few days only hence may not be related.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult a Genral Surgeon for the evaluation of swelling of left foot which may most probably be due to infection, get proper investigations and radiology done to know the cause and get treated accordingly.
Get Vitamin D and calcium estimations and if deficient get replaced accordingly. This may help.
Also get RA factor and other investigations to get the proper cause of poly-arthritis and get treated specifically if the cause is found.
Continue the symptomatic treatment for pain and so.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
