What Causes Swollen Legs, Knees And Ankle While On Blood Pressure Medication?
Hi. I was taken to ER last night with stroke symptoms.(double vision, slurring my words, droopy left side of face - eye and lips, and weakness in my left arm) I am 37. They did a CT scan which they said was clear They hooked me up to all the monitors and my blood pressure was actually very low (65/38) and stayed in that range for many hours. They started me on fluid with electrolytes. I was having severe upper back and neck pain also. It was like a charley horse spasm and kept coming and going. They gave me a small dose of morphine to help with that. They kept me overnight for observation and kept giving me fluids until my blood pressure was back to normal levels. I take blood pressure meds everyday for high blood pressure.....? They released me this morning and said my diagnosis was blurred vision and neck pain....which I feel is not an accurate diagnosis. My legs from knees down are very swollen, especially my ankles. Is any of this normal? They told me to folkowup with my neurologist in the next couple of weeks. I really feel they ve miss something here. I feel completely awful today. Everything hurts and I have zero energy or strength to do anything! Any advice would be much appreciated!
* As per my clinical experience, initial presentation with very low blood pressure and history of massive fluid administration indicates possible reason of swelling legs as fluid over load with extra vasation from the intracellular space to extravascular compartment.
* If the blood pressure is absolutely under control, in my clinic I do recommend
- baseline total wbc counts with differential
- coagulation profile
- soft tissue with doppler ultrasound of the lower limb to evaluate the tissue edema and peripheral circulation
- keep the leg elevated over 3 pillows
- diuretic medicine as per the clinical concern.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
