My endodontist performed a root canal, then an apicoectomy. I was on antibiotics for 5 weeks. Now my posterior lymph nodes are swollen and I have clogged ear, sore throat and headache on side of my face. I am also extremely tired. I am 65 years old. What is your opinion? email is YYYY@YYYY . Thank you

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain sore throat, clogged ears and headache along with swollen lymph nodes does not seems to be related to root canal treatment, rather it seems to be most probably due to ear and throat infection.

I would suggest you to consult an ENT Physician and get evaluated. A throat and ear swab culture, and otoscopy of ear etc can help in diagnosis, and treatment can be done accordingly. You can be advised a short course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen, antibiotic and analgesic ear drops, warm saline gargles and steam inhalation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query you have symptoms of swollen lymph nodes after a root canal treatment which seems to be due to bacterial infection due to spread of infection through Eustachian tube and due to allergic reaction to restorative material at times. You do not need to panic about it.

I would suggest you to start taking antibiotics to suppress infection and take hot milk with a pinch of turmeric boiled with it at bedtime for 2 to 3 days as it has antimicrobial action. Sip on lukewarm water and take throat lozenges. Avoid spicy and rough food. Take diet rich in soft food. If symptoms keeps on persisting, visit an ENT specialist once and get it examined. Get blood tests done if required. Start treatment accordingly.

Hope your concern has been resolved. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
