What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes Behind The Head?

My 24 year old son has swollen lymph nodes on the back of his head and severe localized pain. He was prescribed strong antibiotics today, but is dealing with at times excruciating pain on the exterior of the right side of his head. He was told to see if the antibiotics lead to an improvement in 48 hours. I m concerned about the severity of the pain, and am interested in your opinion.

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Better to give painkiller and anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or acetaminophen along with antibiotic for pain relief.
If swelling and pain subside in 48-72 hours, nothing should be done.
But if pain or swelling is worsening then surgical removal of lymphnode is needed.
Application of ice packs will also be helpful.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your son. Thanks.
